Women’s History Month

Women’s History Month Initiative

GFWC Ossoli Circle is pleased to share that, for the first time, we will host a Women’s History Month Community Recognition Initiative in partnership with Knox County Friends of the Library.

Founded in 1885 as a literary circle, Ossoli Circle has long been committed to education, literacy, and access to books. This initiative continues that legacy by inviting the community to recognize and honor women who have made a meaningful difference—in an individual’s life, career, community, or across our state.

Community members were invited to honor a special woman through a donation made in her name.  A recognition reception was held on  March 22,2026.  There were 41 women nominated as a “Special Woman”.  In addition to honoring special women, a coloring contest and an essay contest offered opportunities for youth to learn about Women’s History focusing on outstanding women in our nation, Tennessee, and Knoxville.

Senator Becky Massey presented Ossoli Circle President, Jan Coley with a  Senate Proclamation in support of Women’s History Month and the service performed by Ossoli Circle.  The Proclamation was signed by every Tennessee Senator plus Governor Lee.  The Knox County Friends of the Library were presented with a check for $1750.
